[The only sound for a moment is the knock of the gear being tapped against something semi-hard, and similarly the only thing in focus is a white eggshell with the corners of red and blue shapes.

[The voice is deep, warm, and affectionate.]

[The feed is a little smeared on one corner, and the camera unknowingly focuses on a large, pale hand offering one of the ~~donuts~~ rice balls that Mom packs standard in her bento to a very small Togepi, who takes it in its little hands and shoves the whole thing into its mouth at once. The voice laughs offscreen, and the camera gets a closeup of his green overalls as he untucks his purple t-shirt to wipe the drool off the corner.

It's then that he notices that the camera's on, and finally brings his face into focus.]

...Sorry about that, I hope he didn't bother anybody.

[He tilts the camera back down to show her, but Togepi's lip wobbles and he hides behind North's lime green pantleg.]

She's a Sylveon, the evolved form of an Eevee. Her name's Himiko.

[Himiko chirps and waves one of her feelers in a hello gesture.]

Eevee's can change into eight different forms, so she's just one of them~

[Both trainer and Pokémon nod before Rise answers. North isn't the weirdest name she's heard.]

Rise Kujikawa. But just Rise is fine.

Nope. A lot of them evolve with stones. Two of them evolve with a high friendship level depending on the time of day. Himiko evolved into a Sylveon because she got a lot of affection from me.

Himiko is very happy to be addressed, if the bouncing is any indication.]

Well, as of the ninth of this month, it's been half a year. So a while now. It's not a bad place once you get used to it. But I wish more of my friends were here.

[Then again, coming out of a warzone quaintness is always aggressively peaceful.]

A space soldier? That... sounds like something out of an anime or a Sentai show. But I guess for this place it's not that abnormal. My friend was a bear before he came here.

[Well, at level 5 it comes with Metronome...]

A bear? You know, I heard some rumors about one of the ladies I worked with being half-shark, but I've gotta say I've only really known one kind of bear.

Mm... I can't really say I find that weird anymore. Not since I've been here a while. He's not the only animal who turned human here, and apparently there's people who used to do magic, or were gods or something in their world. My powers not that great in comparison.

Hey now, compared to us ordinary people any power is pretty neat.

What was it you could do?

[She's of the Lover's Arcana, so whoever you bat for, she will totally support you. She's the ultimate shipper.]

It's not that great... All I can do is track people down, find out weaknesses and strengths, make maps, find treasure, and I even learned to heal... but I can't use my powers to fight. It was fun when I got my powers back here for a weekend. I knew where everyone was, literally.

[hahaha well get those pompoms ready girl because it's complicated]

Fighting is overrated.

Our armor could do things like that, back home; we all had a special enhancement, in addition to the stuff that came standard. Mine was a shield, my buddy's was healing. Things like that save more lives than guns do.

[she's never thought about it like that.]

So... my powers are fine the way they are? I just don't want to feel like they need to defend me all the time. My friends should be more focused on the battles!

I think they're absolutely fine. And I think that your friends probably appreciate your powers just the way they are; not everyone has to be great at fighting. My buddy York, the one with the healing unit? He was one of the highest-ranked guys I worked with, and he had one of - if not the - lowest casualty count.

Wow! Yukiko is the one who did most of the healing in the group, but she also had amazingly strong fire attacks! Does York have power like that?

He probably wishes he did, but I can practically hear all the jokes about the burning fires of his passion now. But no, his only real offensive power was firearms. His specialty was infiltration; he could pick just about any lock you set in front of him.

[She has to giggle at that. Sounds like one of her friends.]

Really? That's super useful!

He's a pretty great guy. He's a real charmer.

[wistful teenage girl sigh- ok not really, but he does have a lot of admiration in his tone.]
